Where we work

ChildFund Vietnam is the representative office of ChildFund Australia in Vietnam. Started its first community development project in Vietnam in 1995, over the past 25 years, ChildFund Vietnam has supported hundreds of projects at over 55 communes in 10 districts in Hoa Binh, Cao Bang and Bac Kan provinces.

Bac Kan Program area

Bac Kan is a poor province in Vietnam with the least population among 11 northern mountainous provinces. According to the General Statistics Office of the Government of Vietnam, the 2013 population of Bac Kan province was 303,100 with a density of 64 persons per km2 over a total land area of almost 5000 square kilometres of the province. Around 95% of the province’s land area is forested with the remaining land used for housing or agriculture.

In Bac Kan, ChildFund has been working in 20 communes in Bach Thong, Na Ri, and Ngan Son district.

Cao Bang Program area

In Cao Bang, ChildFund has been working in Trung Khanh (formerly Tra Linh) and Quang Hoa (formerly Quang Uyen) district since 2009. In comparison with other districts in Cao Bang, the two mentioned districts are among the most remote and challenging. Trung Khanh is located more than 350 kilometres from the capital of Hanoi but it may take you around 8 hours of driving to reach a community there. In Tra Linh, residents live in 2 towns and 19 different communities, known as “communes”, most of which are noted in the Vietnam Government’s list of communes with extreme difficulties.

Hoa Binh Program area

When beginning our community development programs in Hoa Binh, the socio-economic conditions were challenging. According to ChildFund’s basic survey results conducted in 1997, the poverty rate was as high as 32%. There was a critical need for water and sanitation facilities in the communities.
