Active Citizens

Program Goal: The goal of Active Citizens program is to build capacity and improve decision-making processes in community to encourage inclusion and collective action.

According to ChildFund Australia’s definition of power , each individual has a sense of self-worth, resilience and confidence that can emerge from the process of empowerment to enable them to take actions and to shape their lives. Increasingly, they should have the ability to form collective strength to influence decisions.

In the communities where ChildFund Vietnam works, we have seen the commitment, energy and cooperation from people of different social groups. Ethnic minority communities and people living with disabilities are committed to advance their own and their children’s rights. Children and youth are also willing to participate in advancing their own rights. There is a lack of opportunity or mechanisms for those communities to recognise their potential strength and to voice issues that matter to them. The Active Citizens Program attempts to build and mobilize community knowledge and capacity to contribute to the development of the community.

Projects will be evidence based, using strategies including IEC activities, pilot initiatives, advocacy and networking to meet the following objectives:

  • Strengthen and promote the capacity of community and civil society to act for positive change.
  • Promoting women’s leadership in decision making processes at home and in the community.
  • Supporting people with disabilities to play a more active role in the community.
