When people think of Cao Bang, they often recall historical landmarks such as Le Nin Stream and Pac Bo Cave, sites deeply tied to the Vietnamese revolutionary movement. But for the local people, Ban Gioc waterfall stands as a symbol both sacred and familiar, a place where nature and culture blend into one.
Ban Gioc waterfall is located in Dam Thuy commune, Trung Khanh district, more than 90 kilometers from Cao Bang City. The waterfall stands nearly 70 meters high and 300 meters wide, cascading down in three tiers into the crystal-clear Quay Son River. On sunny days, sunlight passes through the misty spray, creating shimmering rainbows, a breathtaking sight for all who witness it.
More than a natural wonder, Ban Gioc is a vibrant cultural space for the Tay ethnic community. Locals still share a touching legend about a beautiful Tay girl and a young man from a neighboring village who defied all obstacles to be together. As they escaped together, it rained for many days, and where they finally rested is said to be the birthplace of Ban Gioc Waterfall, forever commemorating their enduring love.
Alongside the falls, traditional festivals are held each year, featuring Then singing, the sound of the Tinh lute, rice pounding rituals, and water procession ceremonies. These traditions are a living expression of local heritage and community bonds. Ban Gioc is not only a scenic wonder but also a keeper of memory, a place where indigenous values are passed from one generation to the next.
