ChildFund Vietnam, cooperating with Cao Bang Provincial Youth Union, Quang Uyen District People’s Committee and Tra Linh District People’s Committee, held the “Sharing project achievements and interventions on rural water and sanitation in 2018” workshop on 22 March 2018 in Cao Bang city.

Participants were representatives from the Cao Bang Provincial People’s Committee, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Education, the New Rural Advisory Board, the People’s Committees of 13 districts in Cao Bang and Vietnam Red Cross Society.

The workshop aimed to share key achievements and interventions of ChildFund’s projects in improving the water and sanitation conditions in rural areas. The representatives also discussed the joint action plan to implement the National Target Program on New Rural Development in the period of 2016 – 2020 applying ChildFund projects’ models.

Cao Bang Youth Union's Deputy Secretary shared the action plan about water and sanitation improvement.

ChildFund has been implementing two water and sanitation projects in 13 communes in Quang Uyen and Tra Linh districts between 2015 and 2018, funded by the Australian Government and ChildFund Alliance. The projects are designed to build healthy communities through improving the water and sanitation facilities and promoting good practice in schools and communities. During the past three years, the rate of households able to access clean water increased from 46.80% in Tra Linh and 78% in Quang Uyen in 2015 to 60.93% and 93%, respectively by the end of 2017.

“We highly appreciate the quality and results of ChildFund’s project. We have reviewed all water and sanitation activities in the provincial new rural development program to apply and expand some initiatives such as building waste collection pits, removing cattle shelters away from homes, building hygienic latrines and establishing operation groups in all other districts in the province,” said Mr. Danh, Vice-Director of Cao Bang Department of Agricultural and Rural Development.

At the end of the workshop, ChildFund Vietnam, Cao Bang Provincial Youth Union and Quang Uyen District People’s
Committee signed a cooperation commitment to implement the water and sanitation activities
in Ngoc Dong and Tu Do communes of Quang Uyen district.

The Youth Union will be actively involved in supporting the communities to build hygienic latrines and remove cattle shelters away from homes. ChildFund will provide consultancy and technical support during the implementation. This is a good sign that shows the benefits of participation of the local authorities in creating and maintaining a safe and clean environment in communities.
